Delivering Sustainable Design for Crows Nest Station, Sydney, Australia 

Challenge

NDY, part of the Tetra Tech High Performance Buildings Group, was responsible for the design stage delivery of MEP services for Crows Nest Station, a new eight-level underground rail station. Developed on a 100% design, 100% construction basis, there were unique obstacles to overcome, including meticulous collaboration on the deep station box and complex coordination to incorporate all necessary services and structures. Additionally, the project presented the challenge of meeting sustainability targets to achieve a 6 Star Green Star rating from the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA).

Solution

Tetra Tech’s innovative MEP design surpassed the minimum energy efficiency requirements by more than 15%, showcasing our dedication to sustainable practices. By integrating station and tunnel drainage systems, we optimized the design, reducing the number and volume of drainage sumps required. Additionally, our fire engineering performance solutions, verified through fire and smoke modeling, eliminated the need for smoke curtains on the platform level, enhancing safety, aesthetics, and maintenance.
