Transforming a London Landmark: The Old Admiralty Building

Large multi-story government building featuring gray and red bricks and multiple columns

Hoare Lea, part of the Tetra Tech High Performance Buildings Group, provided mechanical and air quality services to help modernize the Old Admiralty Building while protecting the building’s historical significance.

Challenge

Old Admiralty is a Grade II listed building with a vast range of historical features that are of national significance. We needed to accommodate a modern, flexible, collaborative workspace while protecting the building’s heritage.

Solution

The spatial constraints, planning, and listed building consent considerations made for a complex project that required thoughtful, innovative solutions. We reviewed, challenged, and adapted ideas through workshops to test proposed solutions to integrate mechanical ventilation and cooling into the building. We found innovative methods to sympathetically integrate modern-day building services within the building while preserving the historic features.

Benefits

The conversion of this world-famous building now provides a new home for a government department. By protecting Old Admiralty’s heritage and features while bringing it into the 21st century, the building can continue to be featured in Britain’s history books.

We helped modernize the Old Admiralty Building by introducing mechanical ventilation and cooling while protecting the building’s historical significance.
